Reality capture to BIM: separate capture from modelling
Understand the steps from reality capture to BIM, including source requirements, modelling scope and review, with clearly limited Novo LiDAR capture context.
Reality capture becomes input to a BIM workflow only when the required source information, modelling scope and checks are defined. Capturing a point cloud or a visual tour is not the same as delivering a reviewed BIM model; agree both stages explicitly.
Capture is only the first step
LiDAR records spatial observations from the site. Multiple positions or trajectories must be aligned, checked and prepared before the data becomes a useful reference. Access, surface conditions, occlusions and the required tolerance affect the capture plan.
Registration and modelling
Registered point clouds establish a coordinated spatial dataset. Modellers then interpret the agreed building elements into drawings or a BIM environment. The model is not an automatic copy of every point; it is a scoped interpretation of visible conditions.
Define the deliverable before capture
The client and delivery team should agree the area, coordinate requirements, formats, level of detail, exclusions and intended downstream use. This prevents collecting the wrong data or modelling more detail than the project needs.

KLCC is a published BLK360 capture example. Its recorded tour scope does not establish that a BIM model was delivered, so this guide uses it only to identify the capture stage.

What buyers usually ask next.
Is a point cloud the same as a BIM model?
No. A point cloud is captured spatial data. A BIM model is an interpreted, structured representation produced from that data and other project information.
What accuracy does Scan-to-BIM provide?
Accuracy depends on equipment, field method, registration, site conditions and modelling scope. Novo agrees requirements before recommending a workflow.
What files can be delivered?
Depending on scope, outputs can include registered point clouds, CAD drawings, floor plans, sections, Revit models and agreed exchange formats.
